Red light & hereditary hair thinning

A closer look at the published evidence.

Authors: Lanzafame RJ et al. · 2013

Published in: Lasers in Surgery and Medicine

Study design: Randomised, double-blind trial with a sham device

What was tested?

Men with hereditary pattern hair loss used a scalp-specific helmet combining lasers and LEDs around 655 nm. Forty-one participants completed the 16-week study.

What did the researchers find?

Hair counts improved more with the active helmet than with the sham device.

How to read the finding

This finding concerns light delivered directly to the scalp by a dedicated helmet. It does not establish hair regrowth from a full-body mat or benefits for brain function. Hair coverage, exposure and the cause of thinning matter.
